FEAR OF BRIDGES

Fear of bridges? Imagine what your life will be like without it...

A surprising large number of people have a fear of bridges with the effect it has on their life ranging from mild discomfort to distress all the way through to sheer panic. Some people say that their fear of bridges prevents them from even stepping onto a low step ladder or platform for other people it may only be when they are up high and go near the edge that their fear of bridges starts to make them feel scared.

Typical things that can trigger a fear of bridges phobia.

• Having to walk or drive across a bridge or walk way.

• Watching a car drive over a bridge .

• Going too close to the edge of something high.

* Watching a TV programme or film involving bridges..

• For some people even seeing a picture of a bridge can trigger a phobic response.

• Often the person with a fear of bridges phobia imagines themselves falling off of what ever they are thinking about.

It is true that people are born with only 2 fears - falling and loud noises -and all the others are learnt. The good news is that because your phobia is a learnt response a new response can be learnt to stop your phobia. It is natural to feel a little uncomfortable if you go too close to the edge of something high, this acts as a useful protection mechanism and most people will feel this. In the case of someone who has a fear or phobia of bridges this useful protection mechanism response has become over exaggerated and rather than being useful it become an unwanted response.

Some people tell us that they want to completely loose their phobia of bridges and we have to say that would be a foolish thing to do as you always want enough of it left to protect yourself by an appropriate response to the situation but also to able to feel calm and relaxed while watching a programme or film about a tall building something high.
